Easy Lego Batman Cake to Make at Home

Raise your hand if you've seen the new LEGO Batman movie??? Seriously it was SO cute! We obviously loved it as we threw a Lego Batman birthday party just 4 days later! I am SO excited to share with you this Lego Batman Cake Tutorial! I've done a Lego figure cake before – this Lego Anakin Skywalker – but he was sitter – this was SO MUCH MORE FUN!

Full video tutorial for how to make a standing Lego batman cake - can be used for ANY Lego character cake

I did so many first's with this cake – first time where I had to work my cake AROUND a structure – in the past I've just built as I've gone – but this one needed to be more sturdy and precise so built it was.  AND my first time using LIGHTS in my cake! How much more AMAZING would Gruff have been if I'd known about these lights 2 years ago?  I see using these lights again and AGAIN in future cakes!

This standing Lego Batman cake includes GLOWING EYES! it's AMAZING - check it out - video tutorial

So the full tutorial is in the video so I didn't bother to take pictures but I wanted to list for your convenience the tools I used for this one! (AND share my modeling chocolate recipe)

Tools

  • 3/4 inch MDF board
  • 21 inches of a 5/8 inch threaded rod
  • 8 nuts (for the 5/8 inch rod) – you can also get washers and locking washers but honestly the nuts are good enough
  • 1/4 inch copper tubing
  • 1/4 inch tube cutter
  • 5/8 inch drill bit
  • something to cut the board – I used a jig saw
  • 4 two inch tall 8″x8″ square dense cakes
  • 3 two inch tall 6″ round dense cakes
  • chocolate ganache
  • black modeling chocolate (I used 10 lbs of chocolate)
  • sharp serrated knife
  • yellow fondant
  • black fondant
  • white food coloring
  • fondant sugar shaper tools
  • LED lights with remote
  • black paper
  • Lego character images printed out

Using real chocolate

  • 1 lbs Black dark chocolate wafers
  • 1/2 C light corn syrup

Using Candy Melts

  • 1 lbs black candy melts
  • 1/3 C light corn syrup
  • melt the chocolate in a double broiler or in the microwave - don't over heat - you don't want chunks but you don't want it to burn either

  • warm the corn syrup then add to the chocolate - stir until fully incorporated - but don't OVER stir - if it separates it's hard to bring it back together - I stir until it get's thick then I stop

  • lay out some plastic wrap and pour the modeling chocolate into it - wrap it up really good - but be careful not to get the plastic embedded in the chocolate (it will be hard to pull out once it hardens)

  • let sit over night!

  • the next day take a piece at a time and knead it - it will warm and soften in your hands

now I used 5 lbs of chocolate to make enough modeling chocolate for this cake

a great part about modeling chocolate is it stays soft longer and doesn't crust over like fondant so you can keep working it longer and get the results you want (or fix mistakes)

For any cake that is recreating a well known image it's all about the details – the hand painted abs, the space between the legs, the prominent eyebrows, utility belt, etc.. are what make this cake really excite people! it doesn't have to be perfect but hitting the right points will take it from "nice" to "AMAZING!"
